Why Atlas shingles
Why South Carolina’s sun makes algae
streaking such a big problem
South Carolina has a hot, humid subtropical climate with:
- Intense year-round UV exposure
- High humidity and frequent rainfall
- Warm temperatures that stay elevated for much of the year
That is ideal weather for Gloeocapsa magma, the algae behind those black streaks. Spores settle, take hold, and a sound roof starts looking old and dirty years before anything is actually wrong with it — which costs you curb appeal and resale value.
The same sun drives the temperature of a dark roof up. Shingles get brittle, fade, crack and shed granules early. It is why you see weathered roofs across South Carolina after five to ten years.
Most “algae-resistant” shingles carry only minimal copper, unevenly spread. The streaks turn up anyway.

How Atlas prevents streaking
It comes down to how the Scotchgard™ Protector is built into the shingle at the factory. Four steps:
- Selection and blending. Colored granules are mixed with 3M copper-containing granules. Most manufacturers stop at a 3–5% copper blend; Atlas with Scotchgard uses a minimum 10% blend, spread evenly across the whole roof — hips and ridges included.
- A proprietary coating. 3M developed a porous ceramic coating for those copper granules. It releases copper ions slowly and steadily over many years instead of all at once, so algae spores never get a foothold.
- Application to the shingle. The blended granules are embedded into the top layer of asphalt on the fiberglass mat as the shingle is made. Even distribution is critical — a gap is where algae starts.
- Third-party testing, every shift. Samples go to an independent lab that confirms the 10% copper content and how evenly it is distributed. Only shingles that pass may carry the Scotchgard Protector name, so the protection is not hit-and-miss.
The result: copper ions keep releasing across the whole roof for ten years or more, so algae never establishes itself. In this climate, that is the difference between a roof that still looks new at year ten and one that does not.
